The Road to Better Design: An Unexpected Detour Towards Critical Thinking

Greetings, fellow design enthusiasts! Today, I'm sharing an insightful journey into a road safety concern I encountered in Gränbystaden, Uppsala, and the unexpected lessons that unfolded along the way.

Spotting the Hazard:
As a cyclist traversing the cycle paths of Gränbystaden, a perilous curve caught my attention. The downhill slope on either side of the road turned what seemed like a routine ride into a potential collision zone, especially for more vulnerable road users like children.

The Proposed Solution:
In a bid to enhance safety, I suggested installing a blind spot mirror to aid drivers in spotting oncoming traffic. Additionally, a warning sign was proposed to remind everyone to slow down, creating a safer environment for all road users.

Taking Action:
On April 4, 2023, I reached out to Uppsala Kommun, highlighting the issue and suggesting these safety measures.

The Kommun's Response:
Christer Åkerlund from the City Planning Administration responded, shedding light on the complexities of blind spot mirrors. Contrary to my initial assumption, the convex shape of these mirrors could lead to misperceptions of distance and speed. There was also a potential risk of distraction, diverting attention from the road.

The Lesson Learned:
This experience was an eye-opener. While my initial idea aimed at improving road safety seemed logical, the reply from Christer unveiled potential drawbacks and unintended consequences. The mirrors, instead of enhancing safety, could create more hazards. Cyclists might also be tempted to get distracted by the mirror, checking it not just for safety reasons but perhaps to admire how smart and beautiful they look while cycling. This could potentially introduce an additional safety risk.

The Value of Critical Thinking:
This journey underscored the importance of careful consideration and analysis before implementing solutions. Critical thinking isn't just a buzzword; it's a crucial aspect of problem-solving. In my eagerness to improve safety, I had overlooked potential pitfalls. This experience has been a valuable lesson in approaching problems with thoughtfulness and deliberation.

Moving Forward:
Armed with this newfound awareness, my approach to problem-solving has evolved. I am committed to weighing all factors involved, anticipating outcomes, and making decisions grounded in careful consideration.

Closing Thoughts:
Road safety is a shared responsibility, and as designers, we play a vital role in shaping environments that prioritize the well-being of all users. This journey has not only enriched my understanding but has also fueled a commitment to approaching design challenges with a mindful and considered perspective.

Stay tuned for more insights into the world of UX design and the ever-evolving landscape of thoughtful problem-solving.

Until next time, ride safe and design even safer! 🚴‍♂️
